Getting started

Works out sizes that keep an aspect ratio, and the aspect ratio of a size.

  1. Choose a preset, or type your own ratio.
  2. Type a width or a height. The other is worked out for you.

To find the ratio of a size instead, click the padlock between the ratio's two numbers to unlock it, then type both the width and the height.

Working on a feed mapping

Open a feed mapping in Designer and its rectangles appear under Feed mapping. Click one to link the calculator to it. The three dots show them all, drawn where they sit on the canvas and on the screen. Designer doesn't tell plugins which rectangle is selected.

While linked, the heading turns green and reads Linked to with the rectangle's name, and the shape at the top gently pulses:

  • Canvas and Screen are the rectangle's width and height on the mapping's canvas and on the screen, each with its ratio beside it.
  • What you type is written to the feed mapping straight away, and changes made in Designer show in the plugin.
  • If the two ratios differ, the picture is stretched. The arrows that appear between the two reshape one to match the other: down uses the canvas ratio on the screen, up uses the screen ratio on the canvas.
  • The padlock keeps the two at one ratio: type a width or a height and the other follows.
  • The centre button, a box between four marks, puts the rectangle in the middle of the canvas or the screen.
  • Fit sizes it to the canvas's or the screen's width, its height, or both (the largest that fits inside), keeping its ratio and centring it.

Click the linked rectangle again, or the button with its name beside Linked to, to unlink and go back to a plain calculator.

The ratio, the size and the padlock are remembered for next time.

Hover the ? beside any setting for what it does.

Release notes

0.3.2

Fixed

  • Held keys: holding a key that types a character in a number box now keeps typing it
  • Tooltips: tooltips are only as wide as they for the centre and fit buttons
Earlier versions

0.3.1

Improved

  • Text selection: a double click or a drag now selects only what is in a number box
  • Help and release notes: both windows are taller, and older release notes are merged, a minor version at a time

Fixed

  • Small window while linked: what is written in the preview no longer runs under the top bar and over the Canvas row 1
  • Held keys: a held Backspace, Delete or arrow key in a number box now keeps going, where it stopped after one

0.3.0

New

  • Link to a feed rectangle: the rectangles of the feed mapping open in Designer are listed under the calculator. Click one and the two rows become its size on the canvas and on the screen. What you type is written to the mapping straight away, and changes made in Designer show in the plugin
  • See them all: the three dots draw every rectangle where it sits on the canvas and on the screen, with a list to pick from
  • Ratios differ: a warning when a rectangle is a different shape on the canvas than on the screen, with arrows to reshape one to match the other
  • Centre and Fit: put a rectangle in the middle of the canvas or the screen, or size it to the width, the height or both, keeping its ratio

Improved

  • Feed mapping: replaces the From feed mapping button, which only copied a size across

0.2.0

New

  • From feed mapping: fills in the size and ratio from a rectangle of the feed mapping open in Designer. With more than one rectangle, choose from a list that keeps up with the mapping as you change it

0.1.2

Improved

  • Ratio in the preview: the ratio's name and its normalised value now show inside the preview shape
  • Smaller window: opens shorter, with the space under the ratio removed
  • Install instructions: installation instructions are now bundled with the plugin

0.1.1

Improved

  • Full values: pixel value now show to two decimal places
  • Improved UI: animated preview, presets in one row and centred pixel values

0.1.0

Initial version.

New

  • Size from a ratio: choose a preset or type a ratio, then type a width or height to get the other.
  • Ratio of a size: unlock the ratio and type a width and height to find their ratio.
  • Swap: turn a size on its side, landscape to portrait and back.
  • Remembers where you were: opens with the ratio, size and lock you last used.

Installation

  1. Unzip the download.
  2. Move the GN_AspectRatio folder into a Plugins folder: your project's, to use it in that project, or d3 Projects/common/Plugins, to use it in every project on that machine.
  3. In Designer, click Plugins in the title bar and open Aspect Ratio.
